![]() Initial encounters with words are slow until each word becomes unitised (stored in memory as a unique letter string) and fast word recognition develops. This is done so quickly and automatically that it’s imperceptible to the reader. ![]() Scientific studies of reading have demonstrated that skilled readers do indeed process every letter of the printed word (see Castles, Rastle & Nation, 2018). Send us feedback about these examples. The central belief in the three cueing model is the belief that readers do not need to read every letter in a word, or every word in a sentence they instead ‘sample’ from the text and they rely on prediction and semantic context to extract meaning. These examples are programmatically compiled from various online sources to illustrate current usage of the word 'gaslighting.' Any opinions expressed in the examples do not represent those of Merriam-Webster or its editors. Amy Westervelt, The New Republic, 19 July 2023 See More 2023 And for all the gaslighting, the message seems awfully clear. 2023 For those who've experienced a narcissistic relationship, one of the biggest challenges − more than even the gaslighting, devaluing and lack of empathy − can be accepting that a narcissistic personality style is extremely resistant to change. 2023 The gaslighting has demoralized those Republicans who remain immune, to say nothing of independents and Democrats. 2023 On the other hand, red flags in a relationship consist of more severe behaviors, like gaslighting, manipulation, general rudeness, lack of boundaries, and emotional unavailability, just to name a few. 2023 The diagnostic odyssey-or the journey to a diagnosis for a rare disease patient-takes, on average, four to nine years, and can include medical gaslighting, complete denial by doctors, and wrong diagnoses. 2024 His calculated gaslighting of so many people struck me as representational of the oil industry as well. 2024 This year’s Better-Than List reveals how such cultural gaslighting matched ongoing political gaslighting. Noun That is the bullying, and the intimidation, the gaslighting that is happening in my community. Its increasing use in many contexts contributed to making gaslighting Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year for 2022. Unlike lying, which tends to be between individuals, and fraud, which tends to involve organizations, gaslighting applies in both personal and political contexts, and is found in formal and technical writing as well as in colloquial use. The idea of a deliberate conspiracy to mislead has made gaslighting useful in describing lies that are part of a larger plan. In this use, the word is at home with other terms relating to modern forms of deception and manipulation, such as fake news and deepfake. In the current century, the word has come to refer also to something simpler and broader: “the act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for a personal advantage” (sense 2). ![]() When gaslighting was first used in the mid-20th century, it referred to a kind of deception like that in the plots mentioned above (sense 1). His mysterious activities in the attic cause the house’s gas lights to dim, but he insists to his wife that the lights are not dimming and that she can’t trust her own perceptions. The origins of gaslighting are colorful: the term comes from the title of a 1938 play and the movies based on that play, the plots of which involve a man attempting to make his wife believe that she is going insane. ![]() The Origin and Semantic Development of Gaslighting

The black widow is often confused with other species of the cob-web spider family, especially the false black widow, Steatoda grossa. While almost all spiders are venomous (not poisonous), there is only one venomous spider species in Wisconsin that is considered medically significant, meaning that it could seriously harm people: the northern black widow, Latrodectus variolus: If you are looking to identify a spider you found in Wisconsin, scroll through the images and articles linked in this post or check out our spider identification tool here. Other large groups of spiders in Wisconsin with around 10% of all species each are jumping spiders (Salticidae), cobweb spiders (Theriidiae), wolf spiders (Lycosidae), orb weavers (Aranidae) and ground spiders (Gnaphosidae). None of these spiders is dangerous and they are rarely seen or noticed given their small size. These are small and timid spiders, often called money spiders. Of course, my "events" aren't real events (the IRS isn't showing up at my door to collect my estimated taxes on that very day), but the urgency is still there. ![]() I can't skip my sister-in-law's wedding and go to it later-if I miss it, that's that. It's psychologically a lot easier to put off a task than an event. It also makes things that are seasonal-like cleaning the gutters-feel more urgent. That shift in focus makes me more likely to stick to the date (which is important when I'm trying to keep my dog healthy or pay the government what I owe them). With a calendar, it's the opposite: you choose the date, then add the task. In a task list, the due date or reminder is secondary: you create the task, then add the date. I'm guessing there's some psychological or economic phenomenon that explains this ( commitment device comes to mind), but here's why putting some tasks on my calendar works for me. Why a calendar is better for specific tasks They have to get done on a specific date, and there's something about using a calendar that makes me more likely to do them. Things like "Dog flea meds" and "Pay estimated taxes"-those go on the calendar. Sure, I should get my kid a bedframe so their mattress isn't on the floor until they're a teenager, but does it really matter how soon I do it? I've had "Buy kid bedframe" on my to-do list for way too long now. And, if I'm being honest, it's mostly for tasks that won't have too many repercussions if they don't get done. I do have a personal to-do list (in Google Tasks), but it's for things I need to do soon.
If you've played around with in-browser object movement on iOS devices a lot of this will look familiar to you, but it's a useful demo for those who haven't had a chance to look into it just yet! Liked this? Read these! With this in mind, Gert-jan Van Der Wel created a simple demo demonstrating how you can interact with SVG graphics on the iPad. We're going to take a look at 20 excellent examples of SVG use out in the wild, so fire up a modern browser and check out the demos below.Īs mentioned in the introduction, SVG graphics can be accessed via the DOM so it's possible to attach event handlers to them the same way you might with other elements on the page. As per it can slow down when complexity increases, but does still work very well for creating highly interactive user experiences. SVG is resolution-independent, making it ideal for rendering cross-platform user interface components, animations and applications where each element needs to be accessible via the DOM. Unfortunately, the performance of canvas apps degrades as resolutions increase and wouldn't be recommended for use in full-screen user interfaces. The answer to this concern is actually both.Ĭanvas offers a high-performance canvas best suited to rendering raster graphics for games such as sprites, image editing and applications that require per-pixel manipulation capabilities. As there are a few similarities between what the element and SVG have to offer, developers often wonder which of these they should opt to use. This enables you to easily target the majority of users online without worrying about compatibility issues.įor mobile web developers wondering about compatibility, I'm happy to report that iOS 3.2+, Opera Mini 5+, Opera Mobile 10+ and Android 3+ also support rendering SVG graphics out of the box. I hope this helps.SVG (or Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based file format that enables developers and designers to create high quality, dynamic graphics and graphical applications with a great level of precision.Īll modern browsers support rendering SVG: however, for older browsers like IE6, 7 and 8 without native support, you can fall back on polyfills such as SVG Web that use Flash for rendering content.
